UC San Diego Hands Broncos 13-8 Defeat at WWPA Championships

Nov. 18, 2006

POMONA, Calif. - The Santa Clara Broncos had a tough match Saturday against No. 1 seeded UC San Diego. The Broncos managed to put up 8 goals, and goalie Robert Callahan made nine saves, but it wasn't enough as UC San Diego won the game 13-8. Santa Clara will now face No. 3 seeded UC Davis Sunday at 1:30 p.m. for 3rd place.

Saturday's match against UC San Diego was against a team that went 22-5 on the season, including 17 wins against Top-20 teams. It was no easy task, but the Broncos made a good effort. Sophomore Jack Wall had a hat-trick, and sophomore Tommy Hendrickson added two goals of his own. Matt Adler, Mike Detoy and Charlie Moore each contributed a goal to account for the final tally. Detoy also drew two kickouts, along with Andrew Fitch and Liam Farrell who also drew two each. Robert Callahan had nine saves in the loss, also adding a steal.

Sunday's match could be one of the most intense of the season as they face UC Davis for the third time in 2006 as they battle for 3rd place. UC Davis represents one of only two teams to play the Broncos more than once this season, and the only team to beat the Broncos twice in 2006. Of the Broncos three WWPA defeats, UC Davis accounts for two of them, the other coming at the hands of UC San Diego at the Aggie Shootout on October 28th. However, after falling 13-6 at home to Davis on October 1st, in their second meeting the Broncos came out much stronger, and scored three goals in the fourth quarter to tie up the game at 8-8 to force overtime on October 28th at the Aggie Shootout in Davis. UC Davis went on to win the match in 10-8 in overtime. If Santa Clara's progress against Davis this season is any indication of tomorrow's third place contest, it will be a very physical match.

Sunday's third place match begins at 1:30 p.m. Stay tuned to SantaClaraBroncos.com for score updates and match results.
