PRINCETON, N.J. – A balanced scoring attack helped Santa Clara men's water polo earn a split during its second day of action at the Princeton Invitational.
Shane Hughes scored a game-high three goals while Mac Carey, Ryan Werner, Dylan Fara and Graham McClone tallied two each to help the Broncos (2-2) roll to a 16-3 victory over Connecticut College (0-3) Saturday afternoon.
Werner had a team-best four assists and Matt Godar had three of Santa Clara's 14 steals.
The Broncos scored five of the game's first six goals and were never really threatened.
Dylan Pinkert's goal with 5:24 remaining in the third quarter cut the deficit to 7-3, but that was the final score for Connecticut College.
Carey scored one minute later and Werner netted both of his goals in the final 2:01 of the third period to increase the lead to 10-3.
Keaton Fox claimed his second victory of the season in net, blocking eight shots.
The Broncos were 5-for-12 on the man advantage with McClone, Fera, Werner, Hughes and Carey hitting the back of the net.
In the opening game of the day, the Broncos were unable to overcome an early deficit to the 11th-ranked team in the nation as host Princeton got five goals from Sean Duncan and four from Ryan Wilson to earn a 13-8 victory.
The Tigers (6-1) led 10-3 in the third quarter before the Broncos rallied, scoring the next three goals. But Wilson scored the following two, with his final strike increasing the lead to 12-6 with 5:33 left in the game.
Princeton had the edge in 6-on-5 situations, scoring on 6 of 11 opportunities while the Broncos were 2-for-9.
Carey and Reilley May had two goals each for 20th-ranked Santa Clara, which closes out action in the Princeton Invitational Sunday playing Fordham at 5:45 a.m. in DeNunzio Pool. The Broncos are looking to go 3-1 in the tournament after downing Iona, 16-9, Friday.
