SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara men's water polo was unable to overcome a second-quarter offensive outburst by UC Davis, falling to the Aggies, 15-7, Saturday afternoon in a Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) game.

Riley Venne scored a game-high four goals while Ido Goldschmidt and Eric Martell tallied three apiece for No. 11 UC Davis (11-3, 1-0), which connected on 5 of 7 attempts with the man advantage.

Seniors Graham McClone and Will Grant had two goals each for the 20th-ranked Broncos (5-8, 1-1) who were playing their first competition at Sullivan Aquatic Center since the season opener.

Grant's first tally cut the deficit to 5-3 with 6:32 left in the second quarter, but the Aggies, who won their four straight, netted the next six goals, including two by Martel in the final minute of the half, which increased the lead to 10-3.

Freshman Mac Carey scored on a 5-meter attempt for the Broncos in the fourth quarter, but they were only 2-for-10 with the man advantage in the game.

Freshman Keaton Fox started in net for Santa Clara and recorded four saves. Fellow first-year player Patrick Collins played the second half and also had four blocks, including a pair in the fourth quarter on penalty shots.

Saturday's game began a stretch of eight of nine at home for the Broncos. Fifth-ranked Stanford visits Santa Clara Wednesday, with the game set to start at 5 p.m.
