PRINCETON, N.J. – After falling to nationally-ranked Princeton, 16-9, on Saturday morning, the Santa Clara water polo team rebounded in the afternoon with an 11-8 come-from-behind victory against Fordham during day two action in the Princeton Invitational.
Mac Carey (four) and DeMarco Orella (three) each matched his career high in goals to lead the Broncos (2-2) past the Rams who were competing in their first game of the tournament, which is being played at DeNunzio Pool.
Carey scored a pair of goals around an Orella strike in the first four minutes of the third quarter to help Santa Clara erase a 5-4 halftime deficit.
Ian Watson cut the Fordham (3-2) deficit to 9-8 with 2:51 left in the game, but Carey and John Raineri, a pair southpaws, added insurance goals within the next 90 seconds.
The Broncos were 4-for-7 with the man advantage against the Rams and scored on two of their three 5-meter attempts. Carey had both of the 5-meter goals and Orella scored twice on exclusions.
No. 11-ranked Princeton (7-0) remained perfect behind the play of Matt Payne and Jordan Colina who tallied three goals apiece, including two each in the first half, to pace the offensive attack. The Tigers (7-0) scored six times in the opening quarter and had eight players hit the back of the net.
Vinny Sicat and Shane Hughes each scored twice for the Broncos (1-2) against the Tigers.
NOTES
• Carey, Hughes, Raineri, Sam Toriggino, Reilley May and DeMarco Orella were the positional starters against Princeton. Scott Zurnacian was in the starting lineup, in place of Hughes, in the Fordham contest.
• In the Princeton, game, Luca Pagano had an assist and a pair of steals, and Zurnacian had two assists. Zurnacian earned the start against Fordham
• In the Princeton tilt, Sicat notched his first two goals of the season and the total was a career high. He had four goals last year.
• In the day's opener, goalkeeper Keaton Fox saw his first action of the season, replacing Emil Huebner for the second half. Fox had seven blocks and a pair of steals. Huebner went the distance against Fordham and recorded nine blocks.
• Orella, May and Carey each collected two assists against Fordham. May also drew four kickouts.

The Broncos close out play in the Princeton Invitational on Sunday when they face Navy at 11:45 a.m. Pacific. The game will be streamed on the Ivy League Digital Network, which is subscription based ($9.95 per day).
