Men's Water Polo Knocked Off by UC San Diego

SAN DIEGO - Arman Momdzhyan scored four goals to lead UC San Diego past Santa Clara men's water polo, 13-9, on Thursday in a Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) matchup.

Ryan Werner had career-high four goals, and Patrick Kirk added three for the Broncos who are on the road for one more game before hosting Fresno Pacific and Air Force to close out the regular season.

Werner scored all his goals in the final quarter, including the last one with less than two minutes left in the game, and Kirk scored Santa Clara's two third-quarter goals.

The Broncos (6-12, 1-3) entered the third quarter on a strong note with Scott Zurnacian winning the sprint and assisting on Kirk's goal in the first 13 seconds of the second half. Kirk tipped in his second goal of the third quarter with Sam Toriggino's assist, but the Broncos were unable to close the gap against the No. 13 Tritons (9-11, 6-0) who remain in first place in the WWPA.

John Raineri added a marker on his 5-meter penalty shot with less than 1:30 in the first quarter, leading to a 2-all game headed into the second period.

Skyler Munatones scored within the first 45 seconds of the second quarter giving UC San Diego a 3-2 lead, but the Broncos fired back with Reilley May's power play goal less than 3 minutes later to tie the game 3-all.

But Momdzhyan scored twice early in the second quarter as part of a four goal run to give the Tritons a 7-3 advantage.

Kirk scored the opening marker of the game on the man advantage late in the first quarte for the Broncos who were 4 of 7 on the power play, while the Tritons were only 2 of 7.
