Men’s Water Polo Edge by LMU on Saturday

LOS ANGELES – Loyola Marymount was able to edge Santa Clara men's water polo in Saturday's WWPA matchup with a pair of late goals.

Matt Braun of LMU scored a game-high four times, but it was Alessio Brunocelli who made the key plays in the 10-8 victory over the Broncos (6-13, 1-4) with a late goal and assist on an insurance marker for the Lions (6-16, 2-3).

Santa Clara's Ryan Werner and John Raineri scored within 50 seconds midway through the fourth quarter to tie the game at 8-all, but Brunocelli scored with 1:40 left and then his steal set up a goal by Austin Clark with 40 seconds on the clock.

DeMarco Orella, one of seven Broncos to score, tallied two goals in a game tied five times.

Santa Clara rallied from a 5-2 first-half deficit. Orella and Scott Zurnacian made it a one-goal game at halftime and Sam Toriggino tied the contest at 5-all midway through the third. 

Mac Carey's goal knotted the game at 6-all one minute into the fourth, but Clark and Zach Gleason quickly answered to make it a two-goal cushion.

NOTES
Emil Huebner, who has started all 19 games this season, had eight blocks and a career-high tying four steals.
Reilley May tallied a goal and drew a team-best four kickouts. He has induced 25 kickouts over the last sevn games.

NEXT UP
The Broncos have three more regular-season games on the schedule, including a pair of WWPA contests at home. They face Fresno Pacific on Saturday and Air Force the following day. Santa Clara finishes the regular season on Nov. 11, at Stanford.
