Men’s Water Polo Rallies, Hangs on for Victory Over LMU in WWPA Tourney

LA JOLLA, Calif.Shane Hughes scored a game-high four goals and Reilley May notched the game-winner in a thrilling 15-14 victory for the Santa Clara men's water polo over Loyola Marymount in Saturday's consolation matchup of the Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) Championship.

After leading by three goals in the first half, the seventh-seeded Broncos (8-16) had to rally from a pair of three-goal deficits in the second against the No. 6 seed Lions (7-20).

Trailing 12-9, Mac Carey, who had five assists, started a run of six straight goals by scoring in the final minute of the third and again 35 seconds into the fourth.

Hughes, who added two assists and four steals, tied the game midway through the final quarter and May's goal with 2:34 left increased the lead to 15-12, but LMU pushed back.

Matt Braun, who had two goals, and Waugh scored even strength markers 20 seconds apart. After the Broncos were unable to convert on the power play, the Lions had one final chance to tie the game, but Emil Huebner, who was credited with eight saves, turned aside Braun's attempt with three seconds left.

May, Scott Zurnacian and John Raineri each scored twice for the Broncos who face Concordia Sunday at 9:40 a.m. in the three-day tournament's fifth-place game. Concordia defeated Fresno Pacific, 13-9, in Saturday's other consolation game.

Neil LeVecke had a team-high three goals for the Lions who Fresno Pacific in the seventh-place contest.
