PRINCETON, N.J. – Santa Clara men's water polo earned a split during Friday's action at the Princeton Invitational.
In their first competition of the season, the Broncos defeated Johns Hopkins, 13-7, after falling to Princeton, 14-12.
Game One: Princeton 14, Santa Clara 12
Wyatt Benson (five) and Alec Mendelsohn (four) combined for nine goals to help Princeton rally for the win.
The Tigers (4-1) erased a three-goal first-half deficit with five straight strikes to take an 8-6 lead early in the third period.
Mac Carey scored four of his career-high five goals in the second half when the Broncos were able to tie the game three ties, but never regain the lead.
Carey evened the score at 12-all with 4 minutes left in the game, but Princeton's Ryan Willson scored within a minute and Kellar Maloney added an insurance marker.
Shane Hughes added three goals for the Broncos and Carey added a pair of assists.
Game Two: Santa Clara 13, Johns Hopkins 7
Sam Toriggino and Ryan Werner each scored three times to lead the Broncos past Johns Hopkins.
Shane Hughes added one goal and three assists for Santa Clara, which saw its early two-goal lead erased by the Blue Jays.
Toriggino tied the game at 5-all early in the third quarter and that began a 7-1 scoring run for the Broncos.
