Strong Opening Quarter Helps Lift No. 4 Cal Past Men’s Water Polo on Wednesday

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Johnny Hooper scored a game-high six goals to lead No. 4-ranked Cal to a 16-9 victory over Santa Clara men's water polo on Wednesday.

Jordan Hoover had two goals and Vassilis Tzavaras scored once and had two assists for the Bears (9-1) who jumped out early with five goals in a 3-minute span of the opening quarter.

Reilley May matched his career-high with four goals, Ryan Werner scored twice and Mac Carey had one strike and three assists for the Broncos (3-3) in their home opener.

The Bears went 5-for-9 with the power play and nailed their lone 5-meter attempt. They also scored eight times on their first 10 shots on net.

The lead grew to 10-2 midway through the second quarter on Hooper's third goal of the game.

Goals from May and Carey in the middle of the third period closed the gap to 11-5, but Cal scored the next three.

Bernardo Carelli picked up the win in net for the Bears, yielding only three goals in his one half of work.

NOTES
Sam Toriggino, Patrick Kirk, Reilley May, Dane Estrella, Shane Hughes. Mac Carey and Keaton Fox started the game. That group has started all six contests this season.

NEXT UP
The Broncos hit the road to play San Jose State on Saturday. The game will be played at 6 p.m. at West Valley College in Saratoga.
