Men’s Water Polo Hangs With Second-Ranked UCLA Before Falling in Tourney Opener

STANFORD, Calif. – Jake Cavano scored a game-high three goals to help second-ranked UCLA remain perfect on the season with a 13-7 victory over Santa Clara men's water polo in Friday's opening-round matchup in the Mountain Pacific Invitational.

Quinten Osborne and Nicolas Saveljic each scored twice in the third period when the Bruins (17-0) pulled away with six goals.

Patrick Kirk and Dane Estrella scored twice apiece, and Shane Hughes posted one goal and a career-high five assists for the Broncos (4-7).

Santa Clara twice tied the game after trailing by two goals.

Kirk and Hughes scored less than one minute apart shortly after halftime to tie the contest at 5-all.

Osborne snapped that tie and then started a run of three goals in two minutes late in the third. Cavano capped the quick flurry with his third goal, giving the Bruins a 10-5 lead.

Danny Roland went the distance in net for UCLA, registering seven saves.

Sean Tehaney played the first three quarters in goal for the Broncos and posted six blocks.

Santa Clara faces UC San Diego on Saturday at 10:40 a.m. at Belardi Pool.

The three-day, 16-team event concludes on Sunday.

Sam Toriggino, Patrick Kirk, Reilley May, Dane Estrella, Shane Hughes and Mac Carey have started all 11 games. Sean Tehaney made his third-career start in net.

Santa Clara plays fellow Western Water Polo Association UC San Diego member on Saturday at 10:40 a.m. The Tritons lost to Pepperdine, 10-9, on Friday. The Broncos will play Saturday at either 4 p.m. or 5:20 p.m. against San Jose State or UC Irvine, and then have one more game on Sunday.
