Men’s Water Polo Splits On Day Two of Mountain Pacific Invitational

STANFORD, Calif. – Santa Clara men's water polo earned a split on the second day of the Mountain Pacific Invitational.

The Broncos (5-8) defeated San Jose State, 13-9, after losing to UC San Diego, 15-7, in Saturday's action in the three-day, 16-team tournament that concludes Sunday.

Game One: UC San Diego 15, Santa Clara 7

Kacper Langiewicz, Myles Martinez and Noah Carniglia each scored three goals to lead a balanced offensive attack in UC San Diego's 15-7 win over the Broncos.

The Tritons (11-4) scored eight goals in the first 10 minutes and were 3-for-7 with the man advantage.

Jack Rottman scored a career-best three goals for the Broncos against fellow Western Water Polo Association member.

Patrick Kirk scored once and drew three kickouts for Santa Clara.

Connor Turnbow-Lindenstadt, one of eight players to score, had two goals for the Tritons.

The teams will meet in WWPA action on Nov. 1 in Santa Clara.

Game Two: Santa Clara 13, San Jose State 9

Sam Toriggino, Shane Hughes and Mac Carey scored three goals apiece to lead Santa Clara to a 13-9 win over San Jose State.

Reilley May drew a career-high six kickouts to help the Broncos go 6-for-10 with the power play.

Santa Clara trailed twice in the opening period by one goal, but held the Spartans scoreless for 14 minutes to take control.

Toriggino started a five-goal run midway through the second quarter and when Carey scored 8 minutes the Broncos had built a 9-4 lead.

Adam Bado led the Spartans with three goals.

Sean Tehaney secured the win in net for the Broncos, posting a career-high 13 blocks.

NOTES
Sam Toriggino, Patrick Kirk, Reilley May, Dane Estrella, Shane Hughes and Mac Carey have started all 13 games. Sean Tehaney started both games in net.

NEXT UP
Santa Clara plays Air Force on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. in the finale of the Mountain Pacific Invitational. The teams met last Saturday in Colorado, with the Falcons prevailing 18-13 in a WWPA game.
