Men's Water Polo to Hold Julian Fraser Memorial Tournament

Julian Fraser Memorial Tournament Schedule

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The Santa Clara men's water polo team is set to play host to the annual Julian Fraser Memorial Tournament, which begins Friday.

The three-day tournament features 11 teams from both sides of the country playing a combined 20 games in Sulllivan Aquatic Center at Santa Clara and West Valley College.

There will be 16 contests at Santa Clara and four at West Valley College (all on Saturday).

Action starts at 1 p.m. Friday when California Baptist faces Brown in Sullivan Aquatic Center.

The Broncos (5-9) play four games in the tournament, which was renamed in 2017 to honor a former Santa Clara player (formerly the Rodeo Tournament). A two-year member of the program, Fraser passed away in February of 2017.

Santa Clara's first game in the tournament is set for 2:20 p.m. Friday vs. Harvard.

"The Julian Fraser Memorial Tournament is extremely important to me and all the players on our team," head coach Keith Wilbur said. "Julian was one of the top players in the East Coast coming out of high school, and he became a starter and standout player at Santa Clara in just two years of play. Julian is a player who excelled on the east and west coasts in water polo, and the Julian Fraser Memorial Tournament matches up teams from east and west coast for some great competition. Also, in between games, you can see a lot of players from different colleges reunite from their playing days in high school and club. It is our signature event of the year, and it is a great way to remember and celebrate Julian, his love of the sport, and all of the great friendships he built throughout his playing career."

San Jose State will be the host school for games at West Valley College in nearby Saratoga, California. The first game at that site is set for 9 a.m. Saturday when Loyola Marymount meets Brown. Visit the San Jose State men's water polo webpage for details on games at West Valley College.

Five schools will make the trip from the East Coast.

Santa Clara games will be streamed and live stats will be provided. Results and box scores for all remaining games will be posted on the tournament page.

About the Julian Fraser Memorial Tournament: The Santa Clara water polo community lost one its own in the spring of 2017 with the passing of men's player Julian Fraser. The two-year member of the program touched many around him in his short life. In recognition, the water polo program renamed the annual Rodeo Tournament as the Julian Fraser Memorial Tournament, a three-day event which features teams from both sides of the country. Fraser was beloved by coaches, teammates and the Santa Clara University community. He had a true joy for the sport, he was a fierce competitor and enjoyed the camaraderie with his teammates. This annual tournament is a fitting way to honor and remember him.
