Men’s Water Polo Sweeps on Day Two of Julian Fraser Memorial Tournament

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara men's water polo remained perfect during its Julian Fraser Memorial Tournament with a pair of wins on Saturday.

The Broncos (8-9) downed Wagner, 13-10, and then knocked off Saint Francis Brooklyn, 9-7, in the 11-team, three-day event.

Santa Clara, which has won four of its last five, opened tournament play on Friday with a 15-13 victory over Harvard.

"The guys are playing really well," head coach Keith Wilbur said. "It's a big tournament with good competition. Friday night was a good game against Harvard-- a big win. The guys kept it up today."

Ten of the 13 games played over the first two days have been decided by three goals or less.

Four of Saturday's 10 games were played at West Valley College, with San Jose State serving as the host institution.

"The thing about this tournament is that every team is good, and you know you're going to be playing close games," Wilbur said. "It's important to play really well down the stretch and to do that three games in a row is a sign of good composure and hard work."

The three-day event concludes Sunday with seven games at Sullivan Aquatic Center.

Game One: Santa Clara 13, Wagner 10

Shane Hughes posted a career-best five goals and Reilley May matched his career-high by scoring four times for the Broncos who outlasted Wagner, 13-10.

Jasmin Kolasinac had two goals and three assists, and Vuk Bulajic and Lachlan Trabinger each scored twice for the Seahawks (10-11).

In a game tied 10 times, Santa Clara was able to pull away in the final 5 minutes.

Dane Estrella tied the game for the last time on a feed from Mac Carey with the man advantage, and Hughes gave the Broncos an 11-10 edge on another assist from Carey.

Hughes scored again with 3 minutes left and May was able to seal the game with goal in the last minute.

May also drew three kickouts and needed only four shots to produce his goal total.

Estrella scored twice and had a career-high tying four assists, and Sean Tehaney was credited with eight blocks.

Game Two: Santa Clara 9, Saint Francis Brooklyn 7

Mac Carey (four) and Shane Hughes (three) combined for seven goals, and Sean Tehaney backboned the defense with a career-high 14 blocks to send the Broncos to a 9-7 win over Saint Francis Brooklyn.

Bogdan Kostic and Tadeu Rodrigues eached scored two goals for the Terriers (4-12) who rallied from a pair of first-half four-goal deficits to tie the game at 5-all.

Hughes and Carey each scored in the third, and the Broncos were able to hang on in the fourth period.

Kostic scored with less than 3 minutes left to close the gap to 8-7, but Carey scored an insurance goal on a 5-meter attempt, one of his three in the contest, with 2:13 left.

Reilley May matched his career-high by drawing six kickouts and Dane Estrella had two assists and helped the defense with three field blocks.

NOTES
• Sam Toriggino, Patrick Kirk, Reilley May, Dane Estrella, Shane Hughes and Mac Carey have started all 17 games. Sean Tehaney made his eighth-straight start in net.
• Hughes totaled eight goals in the two games and May drew nine kickouts.

NEXT UP
Santa Clara will play Bucknell on Sunday at noon, one of seven games on the final day of the Julian Fraser Memorial Tournament. Action begins at 8 a.m. when San Jose State faces Brown. Results and box scores for all remaining games will be posted on the tournament page.

About the Julian Fraser Memorial Tournament: The Santa Clara water polo community lost one its own in the spring of 2017 with the passing of men's player Julian Fraser. The two-year member of the program touched many around him in his short life. In recognition, the water polo program renamed the annual Rodeo Tournament as the Julian Fraser Memorial Tournament, a three-day event which features teams from both sides of the country. Fraser was beloved by coaches, teammates and the Santa Clara University community. He had a true joy for the sport, he was a fierce competitor and enjoyed the camaraderie with his teammates. This annual tournament is a fitting way to honor and remember him.

Tickets: There are both single-game and all-day options for the tournament. Entry will require the purchase of a $10 all-day pass (exit and entry for the day) with the exception of Santa Clara contests. Patrons may purchase a single-game ticket priced at $6 for each of the four Broncos games. All-day passes purchased at Santa Clara do not include entry to the games at West Valley College. Single-game Santa Clara tickets or all-day passes are available online or at the gate. Sullivan Aquatic Center opens one hour prior to the first game each day. Parking: For weekday games, the Leavey Center lot, located on Accolti Way off El Camino Real, is free beginning one hour prior to the start. Any other parking facility on campus will be subject to normal daily rates or restrictions, including the main structure, located on Palm Drive.
