Late Surge From California Baptist Snaps Men’s Water Polo Winning Streak

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – A late rally from California Baptist snapped the season-long winning streak of Santa Clara men's water polo.

Dominick Nevarez and Kyle Johnson each recorded three goals, and Tanner Shore had the game-winner for the 12th-ranked Lancers in their 13-12 overtime win over the Broncos on Saturday in a Western Water Polo Association contest.

Mac Carey scored three times and Sam Toriggino, Reilley May and Jack Rottman each had two goals for No. 15 Santa Clara (10-10, 2-3), which had won its last five games.

California Baptist (18-10, 3-2) rallied from a pair of three-goal, fourth-quarter deficits.

Shane Hughes scored midway through the fourth quarter to increase the lead to 11-8, but Johnson started the final push with a goal with 2:25 left. After Zach Lowery made it a one-goal affair less than one minute later, the Broncos were unable to run out the clock.

The Lancers had one final possession with 6 seconds left and Nevarez delivered the game-tying goal with 1 second on the clock.

The teams traded goals in the first 3-minute overtime and Nevarez set up Shore for the eventual game-winner with 2:15 remaining in the second extra session.

Goaltender Sean Tehaney came up with a pair of steals for the Broncos, but they were unable to convert. Carey had one final chance, but hit the post on the last shot of the game.
