Men’s Water Polo Wins Opening Two Games at Gary Troyer Tournament

Santa Clara men's water polo won twice on the opening day of the Gary Troyer Tournament, which is being held at Pomona-Pitzer, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and the University of La Verne.

The Broncos (6-4) defeated Cal Lutheran, 14-5, and Wagner, 13-11, on Friday.

The tournament features 22 teams and 40 games over a two-day stretch.

Santa Clara 14, Cal Lutheran 5

Jack Rottman, Arvin Bahia, Shane Hughes and Mac Carey each scored twice to lead the Broncos to a 14-5 win against Cal Lutheran at Pomona-Pitzer.

Hughes also chipped in four assists and Chase Zamborelli made 12 saves for Santa Clara, which pulled away with five goals in the third period.

Ford Eldredge scored on a penalty shot with 22 seconds left before halftime to the give the Broncos a 7-4 cushion. They scored the next five goals, including three in the opening 4 minutes of the third quarter.

Tanner Kaplan had two goals for Cal Lutheran (2-7).

Santa Clara 13, Wagner 11

Mac Carey and Ryan Werner each tallied four goals and the Broncos held off a late push from Wagner to earn a 13-11 win at La Verne.

Arvin Bahia had two goals, Dominick Kirk notched three assists and Sean Tehaney went the distance in net and posted 12 saves for Santa Clara, which led for the final 3 and 1/2 quarters of action.

The Broncos built a 10-6 lead on two straight goals from Werner midway through the third, but the Seahawks (4-12) chipped away. One of Matthew Miller's three goals pulled Wagner with 11-9 with 5:30 left in the fourth quarter.

But Carey and Kirk answered with a pair of insurance goals with the next 2 minutes.

Santa Clara went 4-for-8 on the power play.

NOTES
Ryan Werner, Patrick Kirk, Dominick Kirk, Jack Rottman, Shane Hughes and Mac Carey started both games for the Broncos.

UP NEXT
The Broncos will close out play in the Gary Troyer Tournament on Saturday with both games taking place at La Verne. They face the host Leopards at 10:20 a.m. and Occidental at 2:20 p.m.
