Men’s Water Edged by No. 10 UC San Diego

SAN DIEGO – Kaden Likins posted three goals and Konstantin Karlov and Calder Hilde-Jones each scored twice for UC San Diego, which was able to hold off Santa Clara men's water polo and claim a 12-10 win on Friday.

Shane Hughes had four goals, all with the man advantage, and set up two more, and Ryan Werner and Adam Low each scored a pair for the Broncos (8-8, 0-3) who hung around against the 10th-ranked Tritons (17-5, 5-0) by being efficient offensively.

Santa Clara went for 6-for-9 on the power play and scored on nearly half of their 21 shot attempts in the Western Water Polo Association matchup.

The Tritons weren't as proficient offensively, but produced 32 shots in a game that was tied six times. They forged ahead with four goals in the third quarter.

Mac Carey scored midway through the third to snap a 6-all tie, but UC San Diego responded with four straight goals, including three in the final 2 minutes of the period. Likins' final strike made it 10-7 with 19 seconds remaining.

Werner scored with 3 seconds left in the period, but Skyler Munatones, who had three assists, and Hilde-Jones followed with goals for UC San Diego, which won for the 10th-straight outing.

Jack Turner, who had six saves, was credited with the win for the Tritons.

After falling behind 2-0, the Broncos scored four of the next five, including three on the power play. Hughes had two and Werner one with the man advantage in the opening 10 minutes of the game.

NOTES
Ryan Werner, Patrick Kirk, Dominick Kirk, Jack Rottman, Shane Hughes, Mac Carey and Chase Zamborelli started for the Broncos. Zamborelli went the distance in net, posting nine blocks.
• Hughes has three or more goals in five of the last six contests.
• Carey had two assists to continued his streak of posting at least one in each game this season.
Adam Low had seven of his 14 goals this season in the last three games.

UP NEXT
The Broncos begin a stretch of five in a row at home on Thursday. They will face California Baptist at 3 p.m. and will serve as host to the three-day Julian Fraser Memorial Tournament beginning Friday.
