Gruening Named WCC Women's Basketball Player of the Week

Feb. 4, 2002

SAN BRUNO, Calif. - Santa Clara University senior guard Caroline Gruening was named the West Coast Conference/Rawlings Women's Basketball Player of the Week for her play this weekend against conference opponents Saint Mary's and San Francisco.

She becomes the fourth Bronco this season to earn the honor, following junior forwards Tammy Annas and Julie Butler, as well as freshman guard Quinn Thomas.

Gruening's three-point shooting put the Broncos in the win column twice this weekend. In the double-overtime victory over the Gaels, Gruening posted a career-high 25 points on 7-of-13 from the floor and 9-of-9 from the charity stripe. Her three-pointer, with 38 seconds remaining in the final period, sealed the victory for Santa Clara in the program's first double-overtime contest.

Two nights later, Gruening sealed a 65-64 victory over the Dons with a three-point score with one minute remaining in regulation. For the weekend, she averaged 17 points, shooting 50 percent from the field, 33 percent from beyond the arc and 100 percent from the free throw line. She added six rebounds, five assists and two steals to her performance.

The Broncos will visit the Northwest in continuing conference action. On Thursday, SCU will visit Portland for a 7 p.m. contest at the Chiles Centre that will air live on ASCN in Portland. On Saturday, the Broncos will play Gonzaga at the Martin Centre, also scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
