Women's Basketball Hosts Shoot-a-Thon

May 17, 2002

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University women's basketball team is hosting its annual Shoot-a-Thon on Friday, May 31, at the Leavey Center.

All donations will go directly toward the team's trip to Europe this summer. The NCAA allows schools to travel abroad once every four years to play games against foreign competition. The trip is not only a chance to gain valuable basketball playing experience, but more importantly, a great cultural exchange.

Supporters can participate in two ways. The first is by sponsoring a player, coach or faculty/staff by pledging a dollar amount or with a flat donation. SCU basketball team members will shoot 100 jumpers and 50 lay-ups for 2 points each. Coaches and faculty/staff will shoot 50 jumpers and 50 lay-ups worth 2 point each = 200 points.

Attendees can also show off their basketball skills by participating in the Shoot-a-Thon and soliciting pledges. Participants will shoot 50 jumpers & 50 lay-ups each worth 2 points for a possible total of 200 points. The team will stagger shooting times throughout the day based on the level of participation and individual schedules. Practice sessions are available and people can participate as individuals or teams.

"A few years ago, the development department on campus challenged admissions and it was a battle," head coach Chris Denker said. "Despite a valiant effort by both teams, development came up victorious. We'd love to see a rematch or see other groups become involved."

Prizes will be awarded to the following: male & female faculty/staff member with the highest point total; male & female faculty/staff member with the most pledges; and teams with the highest point total & pledge total. Prizes will include T-shirts, shorts, authentic SCU socks, sweatshirts and plaques.
