SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Chandice Cronk earned her second All-WCC nod and Jen Gottschalk her first on Monday as the West Coast Conference announced its women's basketball All-WCC teams. Cronk, the conference's leading scorer with 16.5 points a game, was named to the All-WCC First Team after earning All-Freshman honors in 2005, and Gottschalk, having a solid year with 11.0 points and 6.1 rebounds a game, was named All-WCC honorable mention.
Not just a scoring machine, Cronk is also the national leader in three pointers made (94) and three-pointers made per game (3.24/game). She is second in the WCC shotting 43.7% from beyond the arc, as well, and behind her efforts the Broncos are second in the conference scoring 69.3 points per contest. Cronk has scored 20 or more points on 10 occasions so far in 2006-07, highlighted by a 30-point effort against San Francisco on Jan. 20.
"Chandice has had a phenomenal year and I feel she is very deserving of this honor," said head coach Michelle Bento-Jackson. "She has stepped up her game in a variety of areas this year and has developed into even more of an offensive threat. It is always nice to see when a player's hard work is rewarded."
Gottschalk, who took two years off after her freshman season in 2003-04, then returned this past spring, made a dramatic impact on SCU's front court. The Littleton, Colo. native brought a hard-nosed and gritty edge to the paint, tallying career highs in scoring and rebounding. Her season was highlighted by a career-best 30-point effort against Gonzaga on Jan. 11.
"Jen worked very hard last spring to get herself back into basketball shape after being away from the game for two years," Bento-Jackson said of Gottschalk. "In a short period of time her abilities shone and she continues to grow as a basketball player. She has opened the eyes of our opponents and has been a great addition for our team."
In addition to naming the All-WCC teams, the conference also handed out its individual honors. Gonzaga's Stephanie Hawk and San Diego's Amanda Rego shared Player of the Year honors, while Gonzaga's Heather Bowman was named Newcomer of the Year, and Loyola Marymount's Amanda DeCoud was named Defensive Player of the Year.
Kelly Graves of Gonzaga and Cindy Fisher of San Diego also shared Coach of the Year honors.
The sixth-seeded Broncos travel to Portland this week for the WCC Tournament, facing off against the third-seeded Loyola Marymount Lions at 6 p.m. on Thursday, March 1, at the Chiles Center.
