Jan. 10, 2008

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara University junior forward Claire Goins was named the Comcast Community All-Star Award winner for the month of November. She was presented the award by Dan Coonan, Santa Clara University Director of Athletics and Recreation, during halftime of the Broncos' first game in the Cable Car Classic on Friday, Dec. 28.

Goins, a Sioux City, Iowa native, along with her teammates took part in several community service initiatives this fall, including the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. By the end of the event, Santa Clara surpassed their fundraising goal and raised $3,171 for the cause. Goins took an active part in getting her teammates involved and was the team's leading fundraiser.

This season, Goins has helped the Broncos to an 11-3 start before entering West Coast Conference play this Saturday. The forward leads the team with a .545 field goal percentage (18-for-33) and is the only Bronco to post a perfect record at the free throw line (8-for-8). Goins produced a career performance in the Broncos 50-point rout of Cal State Fullerton (88-38). She tallied a personal best 12 points and was 5-for-6 from the field.

The Comcast Community All-Star Award is presented to Santa Clara student-athletes who are active in benefiting their local community. The award was developed two years ago and is presented monthly to a different student-athlete who is positively contributing their time and energy to help others.
