After Amber Sprague put USD up three-points, 12-9, Gottschalk responded with a three-pointer to tie the score and jumper moments later to give SCU control. Sam Child's trey gave the Toreros a one-point advantage once again, 15-14, with 12:25 remaining. Yet, Walker was sent to the foul line less than a minute later and made both free shots to tie the game for the Broncos for the final time in the half, 17-17.

The Toreros compiled a 13-3 run to create their largest lead of the half, 30-20, beginning on back-to-back layups from Amanda Rego. A trey from Majors halted USD briefly during their run, but it was a jumper from Doran with 4:20 left that gave the Broncos an opportunity to cut the lead. The two teams traded possession with Walker scoring four points to bring Santa Clara within seven points, 34-27, but a buzzer beater from Sprague ended the half, 36-27.

Santa Clara brought the game within six points in the first two minutes of the second half. Majors made a three-points and Walker followed to two made free shots to make the score 38-32.
