PULLMAN, Wash. - The Santa Clara women's basketball team earned its first victory of the season with a 62-52 triumph over Washington State Tuesday night. Senior Chandice Cronk led the game with 18 points and earned her 1,000 career-point less than two minutes into the contest with back-to-back free throws. Cronk becomes the 17th player to reach the milestone. With the win, the Broncos evened their season record at 1-1, while the Cougars dropped to 0-2 overall.

Junior Elizabeth Doran added 13 points and a game-high two blocks, while senior Jen Gottschalk chipped in with the Broncos first double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Redshirt junior Sara Majors led the game in steals and assists with four and seven, respectively.

The Broncos kept the score tight in the first half, tying the game six times before WSU led at halftime with a score of 33-31. The Cougars continued to control the action in the second half but were unable to distance themselves from the Broncos. A solid two-point shot from Cronk gave Santa Clara a slight edge, 51-48, but free throws by Colleen Betteridge tied the score 51-51.

With 4:17 left in regulation, consecutive 3-pointers from Cronk and Doran put the Broncos up by six, 57-51. After a free throw from Kezia Kelly brought the Cougars within five at just under two minutes, Doran hit another 3-pointer and freshman Kelli Parker hit two free throws to close to the game's scoring.

Santa Clara returns to the Mission Campus for its home opener on Saturday, Nov. 17. It will be a battle of the Broncos as SCU welcomes Boise State for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
