Women's Basketball Opens Great Alaska Shootout Against Bradley

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - The Santa Clara women's basketball team returns to the road for the 2007 Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout on Nov. 20-21 in Anchorage, Alaska. The Broncos face the Braves of Bradley in the first round with a tip off time of 9 p.m. PT at Sullivan Arena. SCU will either face Cleveland State or host school, Alaska-Anchorage on Wednesday.

Last Week for the Broncos
Santa Clara improved its winning streak to two games Saturday night as it posted a 73-51 victory over Boise State at the Leavey Center. Senior Jen Gottschalk led all players with 28 points and eight rebounds, while junior Elizabeth Doran kept her hot streak alive with a career-high 18 points.

On the season, Gottschalk and Doran are team leaders in points, registering 48 and 47 points respectively. Gottschalk also leads the Broncos in rebounds with 27 total. Redshirt junior Sara Majors has been setting up many of the Broncos points thus far and is first on the team with 13 assists.

Cronk Hits Career Milestone
Senior guard Chandice Cronk became the 17th Bronco to reach 1,000 career points on Tuesday against Washington State. The Wasilla, Alaska native began the season with 986 points under her belt and within the first game of the year, brought her total to 998. After two good free throws against the Cougars, Cronk was at her 1,000th point. As of today, Cronk has 1,016 career points.

In The WCC
After a 1-1 week of non-conference action, Santa Clara is tied for third overall with Pepperdine and Loyola Marymount. All three teams have a 2-1 overall record. The Broncos are first in the league in field goal and three-point field goal percentage, while being ranked third in free throw percentage and fourth in steals. SCU also lead conference teams in three-point field goals made.

Individually, Gottschalk is ranked in four categories this week. She is second in rebounds and steals, while claiming third place overall in scoring and fourth place in three-point field goal percentage. Doran tops the list of trey's made, while being ranked fourth overall in scoring and free throw percentage. In assists, Majors owns the No. 5 spot this week, while freshman Nicole Gall continues to pace the WCC in three-point field goal percentage. Senior Cronk is tied for tenth place in three-point field goal percentage and checks in at the No. 12 spot in scoring.

Scouting Bradley
The Braves enter the tournament with a 1-2 overall record. Bradley registered its first win of the season on Saturday against the University of Illinois-Chicago with a 69-62. Junior Monica Rogers led the Braces with 11 points and 13 rebounds.

For the season, Devyn Flanagan is first on the squad in scoring with 29 points, while Rachel Merriman and Megan Klingler are second with 24 points each. Merriman has also dished out a team-best 11 assists and Klingler has posted a team-high 17 rebounds.

All-Time vs. Bradley
Tuesday's contest marks the first meeting of the two programs.

Scouting Cleveland State
The Vikings begin the tournament with a 1-1 overall record and face Alaska-Anchorage in the first round. In its last outing Cleveland State defeated Akron with a score of 59-47. Leading the game for the Vikings was Brittany Korth, who registered 15 points and six steals. Kailey Klein was second on the team with 13 points and a game-high seven rebounds.

Overall, Klein leads the team in scoring with 25 points. She is also tied with Korth, Robyn Hoying and Dominique Butler for first in rebounds. Each player has posted 10 thus far.

All-Time vs. Cleveland State
A potential meeting on Wednesday would mark the first contest in the series for these two teams.

Scouting Alaska-Anchorage
The Seawolves enter the tournament with a 2-0 record, defeating Lincoln Christian twice in early November.On the season, Ruby Williams leads the team in scoring with 31 points. She has also posted 12 rebounds with ties her for second place on the squad. Leading the team in rebounds is Ashley Thompson, who averages 6.5 per game and 10.5 points per game.

In the Shootout, UAA is the only Div. II women's team to win the tournament against all Div. I competition. Last year, UAA knocked off Air Force, 62-60, and UC Riverside, 72-67, to take the title.

All-Time vs. Alaska-Anchorage
A possible meeting of the Broncos and Seawolves on Wednesday would mark the first contest between the two teams.

On Deck
The Broncos return to action on Sunday, Nov. 25 against the 49ers of Long Beach State. Tip off is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Leavey Center.
