SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara women's basketball team is off to a tremendous start. The Broncos have compiled a league best 7-3 overall record and return home riding a three-game win streak to host the Spartans of San Jose State on Friday, Dec. 21 at 7 p.m. With the season more than a third complete, redshirt junior Sara Majors sat down with SantaClaraBroncos.com to talk about the season, her teammates and her holiday plans.
SantaClaraBroncos.com: In your own words, how is the season shaping for the Broncos?
Sara Majors: The season is flying by like it always does, and with only a few more preseason games remaining, I would say our team has been moving in the right direction towards achieving our goals. From here, we can only continue to work hard each day in order to ensure control in shaping our own fate this season.
SCB: Thus far, what has been a highlight of the season for you?
SM: No highlights so far, I am just trying to enjoy each day with the team. The seniors are special teammates and friends whom I don't want to take any day with them for granted. I have enjoyed learning and growing as a team through the smooth rides and bumps in the road.
SCB: Talk about your game against Pacific. You set several new career-highs and seemed to be the spark the Broncos needed to pull out the win.
SM: The coaching staff has been working with me on further developing some of my weaknesses and building on strengths and, in the Pacific game, I think the little bit of extra time and work was beginning to come together and pay off.
SCB: How would you describe this year's team?
SM: I love our team! We get along mostly always. We have many new faces this year but their personalities have integrated well and as we move along our similar paths of school and basketball at Santa Clara we continue to deepen our relationships.
SCB: What one word do you think your teammates would use to describe you?
SM: Crazy!
SCB: When you found out you would be a starter this season after only starting three games last season, what were your thoughts?
SM: I was excited to be able to help my team not just in practice but in games as well and to also gain valuable game experience.
SCB: What athlete at Santa Clara do you admire the most and why?
SM: Anna [Cmaylo] on the Volleyball team! She rocks in life and of course at volleyball.
SCB: Why did you choose Santa Clara?
SM: It was the perfect distance from home, far but not too far! The educational opportunities I was being offered and how well I felt I fit with the coaches, players and program as a whole at Santa Clara.
SCB: Away from basketball, what did you ask Santa for this year?
SM: I asked for new sheets, soft ones.
SCB: What's the best part about being a psych major?
SM: Analyzing my own personality.
SCB: Even though you have another season at SCU, what are your hopes/plans for after graduation?
SM: I want to travel all over but without any plans or idea of where I'll be going next and continue going to school.
SCB: If you could travel to any one place in the world, all-expenses paid, where would you go and why?
SM: Egypt! To see the pyramids and I really want to ride a camel across a desert and I want to do it in Egypt. My inspiration comes from the movie, "The Mummy."
SCB: If you could meet anyone (dead or alive, famous or not) who would it be and why?
SM: Emily Dickinson. I find her fascinating
SCB: If you were allowed to do one thing with Emily Dickinson, what would it be?
SM: Take a long walk out in the country so we could talk and enjoy nature.
SCB: If you were allowed to ask her just one question, what would it be?
SM: There are too many questions. But they would definitely all circle around her poetry and her feelings behind each one.
SCB: What's your favorite thing to do to unwind?
SM: Listen to music and sit outside or in my room and write in my journal.
SCB: If you were given the opportunity to give advice to future SCU women's basketball players, what would you tell them?
SM: Be present, live in the moment of every minute of your college career; in basketball, school and friends. Learn from your experiences and enjoy watching yourself grow as a person.
