SCU Battles SJSU Saturday In Cross-Town Rivalry

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara women's basketball team rings in the New Year with a cross-town rivalry match against the Spartans of San Jose State on Saturday, Jan. 3. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. the Event Center in Downtown San Jose. It is SCU's final non-conference game before the beginning of West Coast Conference action on Jan. 8 against Saint Mary's.

Last Time Out
Santa Clara brought 2008 to a close with a 55-37 loss at UC Santa Barbara last weekend. Sara Majors led the game with a season-high 17 points.

Bronco Watch
Forward Lena Gipson continues to lead the team in points and rebounds, averaging a double-double with 13.1 points and 10.9 rebounds per game. She has registered double-doubles in 10 of the Broncos' 14 games. Claire Goins reclaimed the No. 1 spot in field goal percentage this week (.538), while Majors owns a team-best 36.8 3FG percentage. Elizabeth Doran still leads SCU's free throw shooting (.824) Majors has dished out 47 assists thus far, while Gipson leads with 20 steals and 11 blocks.

It's Raining Threes
The Broncos are at it again! Against the Gauchos, the Broncos tallied four 3FGs. Majors tied a career-high two 3FGs. Doran has now sunk at least one trey in 10 straight games. Santa Clara has 60 three-pointers thus far.

Off The Boards
For the fifth straight week, Gipson leads the West Coast Conference in rebounds. She averages a league-best 10.8 per game. She ranks No. 1 in rebounds and No. 1 in defensive rebounds with 7.64 per game.

The Broncos second home game of the West Coast Conference schedule against the Bulldogs of Gonzaga will be featured on live national television on CBS College Sports. The game time is slated for 7 p.m. at the Leavey Center. Please check local listings for channels.

Scouting San Jose State
The Spartans enter the weekend with a 1-11 overall record. In their last outing, SJSU fell 56-38 to Stony Brook in the consolation game of the Courtyard by Marriot L.A. Westside Holiday Tournament hosted by LMU. Kelly Blair led the squad with 13 points and six rebounds. Shaunna Ridge added nine points for the Spartans. Last Time vs. San Jose State
The Broncos and Spartans last met on Dec. 21, 2007 at the Leave Center. Santa Clara won the game 78-58, with Majors compiling a double-double of 13 points and 12 rebounds.

All-Time vs. San Jose State
Saturday's game marks the 46th meeting of the two programs in a series that dates back to the 1963-64 season. Santa Clara owns a 24-21 edge in the series, and has won the last 16 of 17 meetings.

On Deck
Santa Clara begins West Coast Conference action on Thursday, Jan. 8 against long-time foe Saint Mary's. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Leavey Center. The Broncos then make a quick trip down to San Diego for a 2 p.m. battle against the Toreros on Saturday, Jan. 10.
