Women's Basketball Takes Part In UM Thanksgiving Tournament

CORAL GABLES, Fla. - The Santa Clara women's basketball team continues action on the road at the UM Thanksgiving Tournament hosted by the University of Miami. The Broncos begin play on Friday, Nov. 28 against the Cougars of Chicago State. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. PT. SCU will then play either Austin Peay or Miami on Saturday, Nov. 29.

The Broncos finally return to the Golden State for a single game against the Aggies of UC Davis. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at The Pavilion in Davis, Calif.

Last Time Out
Santa Clara dropped to 0-5 on the season after a hard-fought loss at Florida Gulf Coast. The Broncos were led by senior Elizabeth Doran and sophomore Lena Gipson. Doran had 16 points and three steals, while Gipson collected double-double No. 3 with 10 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.

Bronco Watch
Santa Clara is still searching for win No. 1 as it remains on the road for three more games. Under the direction of first-year head coach Jennifer Mountain, SCU returns six letterwinners and two starters from last season and welcomes five talented newcomers.

Forward Gipson leads the team in points and rebounds, averaging a double-double with 12.2 points and 11.4 rebounds per game. Senior forward Claire Goins and Gipson lead the team's shooting with 59.1 and 58.3 field goal percentages, respectively. From the charity stripe, Goins is 87.5 (7-for-8). Sara Majors has dished out a team-best 14 assists, while Gipson and Kelli Parker had seven steals each.

It's Raining Threes
The Broncos are at it again! Redshirt freshman Rhianna Faithfull and Doran led the charge in the last game. Both players knocked down two treys each against FGCU. They were her first two career 3FGs. Becky Goll, Doran and Alyssa Shoji have also showed off their three-point shooting skills. The Broncos are at 15 3FGs thus far.

Off The Boards
Despite the losses, the Broncos have improved on their rebounding. Santa Clara has out-rebounded four of its five opponents thus far. SCU also ranks third in the West Coast Conference in defensive rebounds, and leads the conference in rebounding defense. Gipson leads the conference in rebounding and defensive rebounds.

Scouting Chicago State
The Cougars enter Friday's game with a 2-3 overall record. In its last outing, Chicago State defeated Akron 64-54. Jasmin Dixon has already scored 106 points for the Cougars. She leads the team with five blocks and 21 assists, and is second with 10 steals and 5.6 rebounds per game. Against Akron, Elana Wroten had 20 points and seven rebounds, while Dixon added 17 points.

The Governors enter the tournament with a 2-2 overall record. In its last outing, Austin Peay edged Belmont, 49-48. Ashley Herring led the game with 16 points, while April Thomas registered a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. On the season, Herring averages 11.8 points and 7.0 rebounds per game. Nichole Jamen averaged 10.0 points and 6.5 rebounds, while Thomas averages 9.0 points and 7.8 rebounds per game.

The Hurricanes enter the tournament with a 2-2 overall record. Most recently, Miami defeated Florida International, 66-49. LaToya Cunningham led the game with 16 points and Shenise Johnson had 12 points and 12 rebounds. Cunningham was 5-for-8 from beyond the arc. On the season, Johnson averaged 16.0 points and 10.0 rebounds per game, while Cunningham averages 12.0 points. Johnson also has 13 steals and five blocks for the team-high.

The two teams last met on Nov. 15, 2007 at the Leavey Center with Miami edging SCU, 85-83.

Scouting UC Davis
The Aggies enter Monday's game with a 2-1 overall record. UCD defeated San Francisco on Nov. 25, 56-49. Kasey Riecks led the Aggies with 12 points, while Lauren Juric added 11 points and a game-high seven rebounds. On the season, Lisa Peterson averated 10.0 points, while Paite Minun averages 6.0 rebounds per game.

The Broncos and Aggies last met on Dec. 5, 2004. Santa Clara won the game, 90-42.

Monday's game marks the 18th meeting of the two programs in a series that Santa Clara leads 9-8.
