SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Trailing in the second half, visiting San Diego rallied for a 67-58 win over Santa Clara Saturday afternoon. Part of the `WBCA Pink Zone' initiative which raises awareness for breast cancer research, the game drew a season-high crowd at SCU's Leavey Center.
San Diego (14-9; 6-3 WCC) became the fourth team in the league to sweep its four games with SCU and USF. The Toreros beat the Broncos in similar fashion January 9th in San Diego, coming back from a second-half deficit to win by 16.
Santa Clara (3-21; 1-8 WCC) received a career-high 27 points from sophomore point guard Alyssa Shoji. Shoji made nine field goals, including five triples. The WCC three-point leader - she now has 62 3s on the year, which ties for 8th in SCU single-season history.
A Shoji 3 with five minutes gone in the first half initiated the scoring for Santa Clara, part of a low-scoring opening 10 minutes. San Diego held a tentative advantage until the 9:45 minute mark, when Shoji dropped-in another trey to give the Broncos their first lead at 16-15.
The Toreros were able to generate nine steals in the first half and lead at the break 25-23.
The Broncos scored eight quick points after the intermission. Maggie Goldenberger's jumper put SCU up by four and two free throws by Lena Gipson extended the difference to six, 33-27, with 15:29 left - the Broncos' largest lead.
Goldenberger scored 10 points and Gipson added 11 rebounds to crack Santa Clara's all-time top 10 list for career rebounds.
Three-straight points by Sam Child broke a 38-all tie and gave the visiting Toreros a 41-38 lead at the 8-minute mark. In the meantime SCU's offense went cold, going scoreless in eight consecutive possessions.
Trailing 45-40 with 3:18 left, Telisha Anderson scored in the paint to make it a three-point game. Dominique Connors answered, putting USD up five and more empty possessions down the stretch ultimately cost SCU a chance at the upset win.
Morgan Henderson finished with 20 points, making 13 of 14 free throws. The Toreros finished the day 23 of 27 from the line.
