MORGANTOWN, W. Va. - Alyssa Shoji tied a West Virginia Coliseum opponent record, making seven 3-pointers but it wasn't enough to beat the 19th-ranked Mountaineers on their home floor as Santa Clara lost 78-55 Wednesday in Morgantown.
Shoji - Santa Clara's sophomore point guard from Bellevue, Washington - connected on 7-of-12 shots from beyond the arc and finished with a career-high 24 points. Shoji leads the WCC in 3-point field goals made and ranked 27th among all NCAA players in 3s entering the week.
Kathy Willinsky's layup with 7:43 left before halftime got SCU within seven, 26-19, and a triple be Meagan Fulps made it 51-42 early in the second half, however no other SCU player reached double-figures in scoring.
West Virginia (12-1) countered by shooting .483 percent from the field as a team. Guard Liz Repella scored a team-high 21 points and forwards Korinne Campell and Madina Ali combined for 24.
WVU got to the free throw line 23 times and committed 14 turnovers compared to SCU's 22.
Santa Clara (2-12) has lost five straight and 12-of-13. The Broncos will try and rebound Saturday night when they host cross-town rival San Jose State at 7 p.m.
