SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara University and the Bronco women's basketball program is teaming up with the Alzheimer's Association to raise funds and awareness in hopes of finding a cure for the disease.
Fans attending the game against Gonzaga University on Thursday, January 19 at 7 p.m. are encouraged to wear purple to show their support for the cause. Purple ribbons will be given out to the first 300 in attendance. Additionally, donations will be accepted near the main entrances of the Leavey Center, 500 El Camino Real, Santa Clara Campus.
Alzheimer's attacks the brain and is the most common form of dementia. All donated funds will be given directly to the Alzheimer's Association.
"All of us here at Santa Clara support the efforts of many to help in the fight against dementia and Alzheimer's," said Santa Clara head coach Jennifer Mountain. "Each of us has, or will be, effected by this disease, whether it's a family member or someone close to us. It's extremely hard to see someone fight this disease. All the efforts made in research provide hope with those dealing with symptoms and complications."
It was seven months ago that doctors diagnosed University of Tennessee head coach and Pat Summitt with early-onset dementia. An iconic figure in college coaching, she formed the "Pat Summitt Foundation Fund" in November, which has already generated over $150,000 in donations.
"Of course we support Pat Summit and all she is doing for the disease within our sport," says Mountain. "Through awareness and support, I hope we can help find a cure."
