SAN BRUNO, Calif. – Honoring excellence in the classroom and on the court, Santa Clara University placed a league-best three student-athletes on the 2012 West Coast Conference Womenʼs Basketball All-Academic Team.
For the second-straight season juniors Ashley Armstrong (3.86 Anthropology) and Meagan Fulps (3.63 GPA - Communication) earned the distinction (freshmen are not eligible). Sophomore Ricki Radanovich (3.34 Accounting) was also tabbed among the WCC's top student-athletes.
Santa Clara women's basketball owns a collective GPA of 3.1 as a team, a point of emphasis for the Broncos since head coach Jennifer Mountain took over the program in 2008. In fact, 10 of the team's 16 players post GPA's above a 3.0.
"There is no doubt that the team's impressive GPA is directly correlated to the emphasis Coach Mountain places on academics," said Santa Clara Academic Support Manager Jason Stock. "I have enjoyed working with Coach Mountain for the last four years because I know that the well-being of the girls as people, and as students, is always of the utmost importance. It all starts with recruiting. The entire women's basketball coaching staff does an excellent job of recruiting young women who will represent Santa Clara well both on and off the court."
Armstrong, Fulps and Radanovich (pictured left to right) each are starters and make a major impact for the Broncos on the court. Armstrong ranks second on the team in rebounding and has scored in double-figures 11 times. Fulps ranks among the WCC's leaders in a number of statistical categories - including averaging 10.6 points per night. Radanovich ranks No. 3 in the WCC in three-point field goals made (53) and No. 8 in three-point field goal percentage (36.6)
At the conclusion of each athletic season, the WCC selects an all-academic squad for each WCC-sponsored sport. To be considered, a student-athlete must maintain at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average, while also being a significant contributor to her team.
