Season-Opening Road Trip Ends with Loss at USC for Women's Basketball

LOS ANGELES – Facing its second Pac 12 opponent in as many games, Santa Clara women's basketball fell to USC 81-46 Monday night. The Trojans jumped out to a big lead in the first quarter and kept the pressure on the Broncos for the rest of the night.

Senior transfer Devin Hudson, just one of two seniors on the young Bronco team, led the way for Santa Clara with a double-double (18 points, 10 rebounds). Hudson was 8 of 11 from the field and added two steals. Marie Bertholdt added six points and five rebounds. The Broncos had eight steals in the game.

Jordan Adams led all scorers with 21 points on 8 of 13 shooting and added a game-high 12 rebounds for the double-double. She also had six steals and four assists. Aliyah Mazyck scored 14 to go with five assists and five steals while Temi Fagbenle scored 17. The Trojans were 25-30 from the free throw line and picked up 22 steals.

In the third quarter the Trojans got the lead to a game-high 63-18 with six and a half minutes to go. Santa Clara got the deficit down to 36 before the end of the quarter.

USC started the game by getting out on top 11-2. After a layup and free throw by Savanna Hanson made the score 14-5, the Trojans went on an 8-0 run over two minutes. At the end of the first quarter, the Broncos trailed 23-7.

After keeping the deficit where it was for the first five minutes of the second quarter, USC came back with an 11-0 run and pushed the lead out to 31 points at the half.

An 8-1 run by the Broncos early in the fourth quarter made the score 70-40 but the Trojans were able to hold on for the comfortable win.

Santa Clara returns to action Saturday at 2 p.m. in the home-opener vs. Air Force.
