Women's Basketball Hosts Air Force in Home Opener Saturday, Travels to Stanford Monday

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – After playing two road games against Pac 12 schools, Santa Clara women's basketball has its home-opener vs. Air Force Saturday at 2 p.m. On Monday at 7 p.m. the Broncos will play at No. 10 Stanford. Santa Clara fell to both Washington and USC in the opening road trip.

Santa Clara (0-2) is shooting 31.8% (34-107) from the field during the first two games of the season. The Broncos have scored an average of 50.5 points per game and grabbed 36.5 rebounds per game. They have already collected 20 steals as a team.

Devin Hudson leads the team with 10.0 points per game and is shooting 69.2% (9-13) from the floor. She also leads the team with 7.5 rpg. At USC Hudson picked up the first double-double of the year for Santa Clara when she had 18 points and 10 boards. Freshman Savanna Hanson is scoring 8.5 ppg and leads the team with five assists. Marie Berthold is scoring 5.5 ppg and grabbing 6.0 rpg.

Santa Clara topped Air Force 85-64 last season in the only other meeting between the programs.

Air Force (0-2) opened the season with a loss at Gonzaga and a loss at Eastern Washington. The Falcons are shooing 32.4% (33-102) from the field and averaging 30.5 rpg. They have averaged 6.5 assists per game to 27.0 turnovers per game and have been outscored 153-79.

"Air Force is a tough, disciplined team," said Santa Clara head coach JR Payne. "They are led by a very good scorer in Cortney Porter and like us, will be hungry for their first win."

Cortney Porter leads the team with 11.0 ppg and 2.5 spg. She is shooting just 29.0% (9-31) from the field and 22.2% (2-9) from 3-point land. Maggie Borngesser leads Air Force with 4.5 rpg and is scoring 2.0 ppg. Myah Jackson is second on the team in scoring with 7.0 ppg and is grabbing 2.5 rpg.

Santa Clara is 11-30 all-time vs. Stanford with the first meeting coming during the 1963-64 season. Last year the Cardinal beat the Broncos up in Palo Alto.

Stanford (2-0) started the year with wins at UC Davis and at Gonzaga. In the first two games the Cardinal have shot 39.1% (50-128) from the field and 33.3% (13-39) from beyond the arc. They have added 14.0 apg and outscored opponents 139-93.

"Stanford is a very well balanced team," said Payne. "They can defend, rebound, and can score in bunches. They will be a very tough opponent and a great challenge for us."

Erica McCall is averaging a double-double with 16.5 ppg and 12.0 rpg. Both figures lead Stanford. Her five steals and three blocks are also tops on the team. Lili Thompson is scoring 15.5 ppg and leads the Cardinal with five threes made. Briana Roberson is averaging a team-best 4.0 apg to go with 9.0 ppg and 3.0 rpg.
