SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Kicking-off the 2016-17 season, Santa Clara women's basketball rolled past Notre Dame de Namur 84-54 in an exhibition at Leavey Wednesday night. The Broncos were in control the entire way, using a big run midway through the first period to erase all doubt.
Santa Clara had a balanced scoring attack, getting double-digits from five different players. Morgan McGwire and Taylor Berry led the team with 18 apiece while McGwire had a double-double with 11 boards to lead all players.
The Broncos held a big edge on the glass, outrebounding Notre Dame de Namur 51-28 and leading 17-2 in second chance points.
The most impressive stat was that the Broncos picked up assists on 23 of their 33 field goals.
"I saw team out there today," Santa Clara head coach Bill Carr said. "You don't get 23 assists without being a team. They shared the ball and played well together. We've got things we need to fix but every team in America has things they need to fix on November 2. I saw a lot of positives."
The only time the game was close was halfway through the first quarter when Notre Dame de Namur was down just 8-6. The Broncos responded with a 14-0 run to finish the quarter and ended the half with a 43-21 lead.
Notre Dame de Namur struggled from the field in the first half, shooting just 16.7 percent from the field and 3 of 15 from 3-point land. The Argonauts picked things up in the second half, shooting 40.7 percent in the final two periods to lift their percentage for the game to 28.1 percent.
Emily Tevez led all scorers with 20 points and added 10 rebounds for the double-double. Kali Taeleifi was the only other Argonaut to score in double-digits with 13.
The only hiccup for Santa Clara came in the fourth quarter. The Broncos entered leading 71-31 but got outscored 23-13 in the period. Notre Dame de Namur shot 5 of 7 from beyond the arc in the final 10 minutes.
"The percentages were good but the technique at times wasn't great," Carr said of the Broncos' defense. "Our defense of the 3-point line late was suspect so we'll go back and fix that. We need to work on execution both offensively and defensively."
Emily Wolph, returning after missing last season with an injury, scored 13 and dished out seven assists while Lori Parkinson added 10 points, eight assists, and five rebounds. Marie Bertholdt was the fifth Bronco to score in double-figures, finishing with 10.
The Broncos play their final exhibition Saturday at 5 p.m. against Chico State. Men's basketball will follow the women with an exhibition at 7:30 p.m. vs. Life Pacific.
