SANTA CLARA, Calif. – After returning to the postseason for the first time in a decade, Santa Clara women's basketball begins the 2016-17 season Friday at 1 p.m. vs. Idaho State in Leavey.

Santa Clara is 2-0 all-time vs. Idaho State with the first meeting coming in 1985-86. The two teams have not matched-up since Jan. 4, 1988. Both games came in Leavey.

The Broncos picked up a pair of exhibition wins last week as tune-ups for the season. They beat Notre Dame de Namur 84-54 and Chico State 83-68. Marie Bertholdt and Lori Parkinson were also named Preseason All-WCC.

THE BRONCOS
Santa Clara returns most of the key pieces from a team that won 23 games a year ago and went to the WNIT for their first postseason appearance in 10 years. The 23 wins were the most since 1997-98 when they won the same number and made the NCAA Tournament.

Parkinson led Santa Clara in scoring with 11.6 ppg and was second with 6.5 rpg. She also led the team with 31 blocks and finished second with 70 steals.

Bertholdt led the Broncos in rebounding with 6.7 per game and was second with 11.3 ppg. She shot a team-best 78.8 percent from the free throw line while leading the team in makes (130) and attempts (165).

The Broncos also welcome back Morgan McGwire who averaged 10.1 ppg and 5.5 rpg and Taylor Berry who was fourth in the WCC a year ago with 2.3 steals per game.

Santa Clara finished last season No. 2 in the nation with 12.6 spg and No. 4 with 403 total steals. They were also No. 6 nationally with 21.7 turnovers forced per game.

THE BENGALS
Idaho State finished last season 18-15 and 8-10 in the Big Sky. The Bengals made a run to the finals of the Big Sky Tournament title game as the ninth seed before falling to third-seeded Idaho.

The Bengals outscored opponents by an average of 63.4-62.2 last season and held a 40.7-36.2 edge in rebounding. They shot 40.9 percent from the floor and 30.5 percent from beyond the arc.

Brooke Blair is the top returning scorer for Idaho State. Blair averaged 12.4 ppg, second on the team, and led the way with 44 3-pointers made despite shooting just 29.9 percent from downtown.

Freya Newton averaged 6.2 rpg a season ago to lead the team. She was also third on the team with 2.5 apg while scoring 6.0 ppg.

Parking: For weekday games, the Leavey Center lot, located on Accolti Way off El Camino Real, is free beginning one hour prior to tipoff. Any other parking facility on campus will be subject to normal daily rates or restrictions, including the main structure, located on Palm Drive.
