Women's Basketball Announces Two Signings for 2017-18

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara women's basketball has signed a pair of players to national letters of intent for the 2017-18 season.

The Broncos will welcome Alexus Brigham and Madison Piper to the roster next season as true freshmen.

"Both Madison and Alexus are exactly the type of student-athletes that will represent Santa Clara and our basketball program in a first class manner," Santa Clara head coach Bill Carr said. "Our staff is extremely happy to have both of these young women joining our basketball family."

Piper is a 5-11 guard from Lawrence, Kan. where she attends Lawrence Free State. Piper is a two-time Sunflower League Player of the Year and was named First Team 6A All-State each of the last three years. She has also picked up all-state recognition from Lawrence Journal World, Kansas City Star, Topeka Capitol Journal, and Wichita Eagle.

She is the school's all-time leading scorer and averaged 18.5 points per game and 6.8 rebounds per game a year ago. She also holds the school's single-season recordsin points, field goals, and 3-pointers. Piper has reached double-digits in points in 58 of her 66 career varsity games.

She was one of the finalists for the DiRenna Award in 2016. The DiRenna Award is given to the most outstanding women's basketball player in the Kansas City metro area.

"Madison comes to Santa Clara able to play many positions on the court and will put pressure on any defense because of her shooting skills," Carr said. "She also will make her teammates better with her court vision and passing ability."

Brigham is a 5-8 guard from Fort Worth, Texas where she attended Northwest High School. She is a three-time team MVP and three-time First Team All-District selection. She was also named the defensive MVP in 2015 and newcomer of the year in 2014. As a junior Brigham averaged 15.3 points per game and 4.6 rebounds per game.

She has excelled in the classroom as well. As a freshman she was named Academic All-District.

"We're so excited for Alexus to join our program," Carr said. "She has the ability to shoot the ball from great range and with her quickness and anticipation she will be a great defensive presence in the WCC."
