Pair of Double-Doubles Lead Women's Basketball Past UC Santa Barbara

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Finishing a stretch of five road games, Santa Clara women's basketball beat UC Santa Barbara 69-58 Wednesday night. The Broncos had two players collect double-doubles and absolutely cleaned up on the glass to hold off the Gauchos.

Santa Clara (3-3) dominated the fourth quarter 27-18 to pull away from UC Santa Barbara (2-4) after a tightly contested 30 minutes of action.

Taylor Berry went on a 7-0 run of her own to end the third quarter and start the fourth. Her outburst put the Broncos up 46-40 but the Gauchos came back with five straight points.

Marie Bertholdt followed with her own 6-0 run with three layups over the span of a minute and a half to give Santa Clara a 52-45 lead with 6:45 to go in the game.

Santa Clara would make just one field goal during the rest of the game, but went 15 of 18 from the charity stripe to ice the game.

The Broncos outrebounded the Gauchos 49-23 and had a 17-3 advantage in second-chance points. Santa Clara had almost as many offensive rebounds (20) as total rebounds for UC Santa Barbara.

Bertholdt led all scorers with 16 points on 6 of 9 shooting from the field and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. Morgan McGwire scored 12 and pulled down 11 boards for her first. The Broncos have had at least one double-double in four of six games and have registered five on the season.

Emily Wolph guided the offense with five assists and added 15 points while Taylor Berry scored 13 on 5 of 6 shooting from the floor.

Sarah Porter led the Gauchos with 15 and hit three from beyond the arc. Onome Jemerigbe scored 11 and Aliceah Hernaded added 10 to round out the double-digit scorers for UC Santa Barbara.

The first half was a tale of two quarters with each team dominating one 10-minutes period. Santa Clara scored the first six points of the game on 3-pointers and built a 9-2 lead en route to an 18-7 lead at the first break. UC Santa Barbara came back and outscored the Broncos 23-13 in the second quarter to make it a 31-30 Santa Clara lead at the half.

The Broncos are back in action Nov. 11 at 2 p.m. vs. UC Santa Cruz in their return to the Leavey Center.
