West Coast Conference Action Opens for Women's Basketball Thursday Against BYU

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – With nonconference play in the rearview mirror, Santa Clara women's basketball opens its West Coast Conference slate against reigning regular season champion BYU on Thursday at 7 p.m. in Leavey.

At the Play 4 Kay Shootout in Las Vegas from Dec. 19-21, the Broncos dropped games to Oklahoma State and No. 21 South Florida before ending with a convincing 60-46 win over New Mexico State.

Santa Clara is 1-13 all-time vs BYU with the first meeting coming in 1998. The Broncos are 1-6 against the Cougars in Leavey. Last year BYU won both regular season meetings and knocked Santa Clara out of the WCC Tournament in the semifinals.

THE BRONCOS
Santa Clara (5-6, 0-0 WCC) finished the nonconference season scoring 65.0 points per game and shooting 40.4 percent from the field and 31.0 percent from beyond the arc. The Broncos have a plus-3.1 rebound differential and are forcing 15.6 turnovers per game.

Morgan McGwire leads the team in scoring with 12.5 ppg and a 49.5 percent mark from the floor. She also leads the team with 15 blocks and is second with 7.5 rebounds per game.

Emily Wolph is fourth in the conference with 4.6 assists per game and tied for second with 24 3-pointers made. She is also tied for 10th nationally shooting 92.3 percent from the free throw line and is second on the team in scoring with 12.3 ppg.

Lori Parkinson leads Santa Clara with 7.9 rpg and 17 steals while scoring 10.7 ppg. Marie Bertholdt is scoring 11.4 ppg to go with 6.0 rpg and a team-high in free throws made (41) and attempted (55).

THE COUGARS
BYU (6-5, 0-0 WCC) is scoring 64.0 ppg and allowing 63.0. The Cougars shoot 40.4 percent from the field and 30.3 percent from beyond the arc. They are being outrebounded on the season 41.0-36.0.

Cassie Broadhead leads the team and is third in the WCC with 16.5 ppg on a team-best 48.8 percent mark from the field. She also leads the team with 13 blocks and is adding 3.7 apg and 2.1 spg as well.

Kalani Purcell is tops on BYU and second in the league with 8.9 rpg and is scoring 11.7 ppg. She also leads the way with 4.2 apg. Makenzie Pulsipher scores 12.5 ppg and has hit a team-best 19 3-pointers but is shooting just 27.1 percent from beyond the arc.

: For weekday games, the Leavey Center lot, located on Accolti Way off El Camino Real, is free beginning one hour prior to tipoff. Any other parking facility on campus will be subject to normal daily rates or restrictions, including the main structure, located on Palm Drive.
