Women's Basketball Continues WCC Action at Portland

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – After a pair of tight games to open the conference season, Santa Clara women's basketball returns to the floor at Portland Thursday at 7 p.m.

On Thursday, the Broncos beat BYU 64-63 for their first win over the Cougars in 18 years. It was also the first West Coast Conference win for head coach Bill Carr. They followed it up with an overtime loss at San Francisco on Saturday.

Santa Clara is 40-30 all-time vs. Portland with the first meeting coming in 1986-87. Last season the Broncos beat the Pilots twice and are on a six-game winning streak over Portland.

THE BRONCOS
Santa Clara (6-7, 1-1 WCC) is scoring 65.2 points per game while shooting 40.0 percent from the floor and 32.1 percent from beyond the arc. The Broncos are outrebounding opponents 38.4-36.5 and forcing 16.0 turnovers per game.

Emily Wolph leads the team with 13.1 ppg and 4.5 assists per game. She leads the WCC with 33 3-pointers made and a 90.6 percent mark from the free throw line.

Morgan McGwire is second on the team in scoring (12.0 ppg) and rebounding (7.3 pg) while leading the way with 1.2 blocks per game. Lori Parkinson leads Santa Clara with 7.8 rpg and 1.6 steals per game and is scoring 11.6 ppg. Marie Bertholdt scores 11.0 ppg and grabs 6.3 rpg.

THE PILOTS
Portland (3-10, 1-1 WCC) snapped a five-game losing streak in its last game at Pepperdine on Saturday. It was the first win for the Pilots over a Division I opponent this season.

The Pilots are being outscored 70.8-58.2 this season and outrebounded 38.9-36.5. They are shooting 35.5 percent from the floor and 30.6 percent from beyond the arc while committing 16.8 tpg.

Darian Slaga is the only player averaging double-figures at 12.4 ppg. Kaylie Van Loo is third in the WCC with 5.3 apg and is second on Portland with 9.2 ppg. Holly Blades has knocked down a team-high 24 3-pointers while scoring 7.5 ppg. Julie Spencer's 8.2 rpg is fourth in the conference and she is adding 8.8 ppg as well.
