Marie Bertholdt Signs Professional Contract in Germany

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – After finishing her career No. 11 on the all-time scoring list, Santa Clara women's basketball's Marie Bertholdt signed a professional contract. She will join Marburg of the German Bundesliga.

Bertholdt was born in Germany and moved to the U.S. at 11 months old. She holds dual citizenship and is fluent in German.

Her mother Stephanie played professionally in Germany for SG BC/USC Muenchen from 1985-1993. Her team won the Deutschen Pokal twice and the Deutsche Meisterschaft once. Her father Joerg played for the German volleyball national team as well.

Bertholdt, a four-year starter and two-time All-WCC selection, scored 1,174 points in her Santa Clara career. On Jan. 7 vs. LMU, she became just the 23rd player in Santa Clara history with 1,000 career points.

She finished third in Bronco history with 753 rebounds, second with 386 free throws, and fifth with 504 free throws attempted. Bertholdt also tied for the second most games played in Santa Clara history with 119, 115 of which were starts, and is fifth with 3,333 minutes played.

At the Red and White Celebration on May 13, Bertholdt was awarded the Jim Shea Award. The award recognizes a male or female senior athlete who has courageously led their team through their selfless actions and served as a leader among the student-athlete community. The award is in honor of football player Jim Shea '63 who was the first Santa Clara student whose life was cut short serving in the Vietnam War.

Bertholdt will report in August with the season set to begin in September.
