Women's Basketball Loses Heartbreaker at Grand Canyon

PHOENIX – The final nonconference game of the season came down to the final possession but Santa Clara women's basketball fell at Grand Canyon 39-38 on Thursday afternoon.

After a jumper from the free throw line by Brie Mobley rattled in to give the Lopes (5-8) a one-point lead, the Broncos (4-7) in-bounded to Ashlyn Herlihy who drove to the basket but she had her shot blocked by Jessica Gajewski.

Once again, the Santa Clara defense was tough, allowing Grand Canyon to shoot just 27-percent from the floor and 24-percent from downtown. The Broncos forced 15 turnovers and collected 10 steals while holding a 43-29 edge on the glass.

Despite the poor shooting from deep, the Lopes used their six 3-pointers to just one from the Broncos to make up for Santa Clara's 11-3 advantage from the charity stripe.

Mobley had a double-double with a game-high 16 points and added 13 rebounds. Gajewski scored 11 and hit three from deep with Jordan Jackson also knocking down two 3-pointers for all six of her points.

A 3-pointer by Jackson with 4:06 to go gave Grand Canyon a 37-33 lead but a layup from Morgan McGwire, two of her six in the period, and three free throws from Herlihy put the Broncos on top 38-37.

McGwire finished with a career-high tying 16 rebounds and tied for the team-lead with eight points. Taylor Berry also scored eight with Herlihy adding seven and five boards.

Santa Clara started the game by scoring the first six but Grand Canyon came back with 13 in a row of its own. The Broncos then ended the first quarter and started the second on an 8-0 run to take a 15-13 lead. From that point forward the game was within two points the rest of the way except for a 32-28 lead for the Lopes at the end of the third quarter.
