Women's Basketball Hosts Gonzaga Saturday in First Home Conference Action

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara women's basketball hosts West Coast Conference preseason favorite Gonzaga in the DICK'S Sporting Goods conference home opener Saturday at 2 p.m.

In the league opener Thursday, the Broncos fell at Pepperdine 56-55 when a buzzer-beater hit the back rim.

SERIES HISTORY
Santa Clara is 29-36 all-time against Gonzaga with the first meeting coming in 1987-88. Last year the Zags took both meetings with the game in Santa Clara being decided by one point.

THE BRONCOS
Santa Clara (4-8, 0-1 WCC) has lost three in a row, all on the road with the last two coming by one point each. The Broncos lead the West Coast Conference in defense, allowing just 57.1 points per game and forcing 16.5 turnovers per game.

Redshirt freshman Ashlyn Herlihy leads the team with 10.3 ppg and 15 3-pointers made. She adds 5.3 rpg as well, third on the team. Kyla Martin's 4.6 assists per game leads the Broncos and she is second in scoring with 9.6 ppg. Morgan McGwire leads the team with 8.6 rpg, 2.4 steals per game, and 2.1 blocks per game. She had a program record nine rejections against Pepperdine the last time out. Taylor Berry adds 8.7 ppg and is second with 6.8 rpg.

THE BULLDOGS
Gonzaga (8-4, 1-0 WCC) has won three in a row and six of seven after starting the season 2-3. The Bulldogs shoot 43.1-percent from the field but just 23.3-percent from beyond the arc.

Jill Barta leads the team with 18.8 ppg and leads the way with 15 3-pointers made. Barta also averages 9.6 rpg, tops on the team. Zykera Rice scores 13.4 ppg and Chandler Smith averages 11.4 with both players bringing down 6.6 rpg. Jessie Loera's 3.6 apg leads Gonzaga and she adds 6.3 ppg.
