Women's Basketball Taken Down by BYU

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Brenna Chase scored a career-high 25 to lead BYU to a 55-34 victory over Santa Clara women's basketball in Leavey Center Thursday night.

Chase finished the night 10-for-16 from the field and 5-for-9 from beyond the arc with Cassie Devashrayee and Sara Hamson both adding 10 points.

After a slow first quarter, the Cougars (14-10, 9-4 WCC) got their offense going while the Broncos (7-17, 3-10 WCC) were never able to find a rhythm. Santa Clara shot a season-low 19.6-percent from the field, including 13.8-percent in the first half.

Chase and Devashrayee hit back-to-back 3-pointers early in the second quarter and BYU used it to start a 9-0 run to take a 22-9 lead that the Broncos wouldn't recover from. Santa Clara missed eight-straight field goals and went scoreless for over five and a half minutes.

Charise Holloway scored seven-straight Broncos points and cut the Cougars lead to 32-22 at the 3:45 mark of the third to give Santa Clara some hope, but it was short-lived.

BYU followed with a 7-0 run in under a minute in the third to get up 40-22 with 1:37 to go in the period.

Holloway led the Broncos with 13 points and knocked down three from distance while Morgan McGwire added a game-high 12 rebounds.
