Women's Basketball Can't Complete Comeback at San Diego

SAN DIEGO, Calif.Charise Holloway tied a career-high with 19 points but it wasn't enough as Santa Clara women's basketball's comeback attempt at San Diego came up short in a 51-40 defeat Saturday afternoon.

Despite trailing by as many as 15 in the first half, the Broncos (7-18, 3-11 WCC) cut the Toreros (14-11, 7-7 WCC) lead to one on a pair of free throws from Holloway four seconds into the fourth quarter.

San Diego responded by going on an 11-2 run and outscored Santa Clara 18-8 over the final 9:46.

Both teams struggled to take care of the ball, committing a combined 42 turnovers. San Diego took advantage of the Broncos' 22 by scoring 19 points with Santa Clara scoring just seven off of 20 Toreros miscues.

Holloway scored nine in a row for the Broncos over four minutes in the third quarter. She knocked down a pair of 3-pointers and added an and-one to get Santa Clara within 30-26 with 3:04 left in the period.

Sydney Williams scored six points around a 3-pointer from Aubrey Ward-El to put San Diego on a 9-0 run over two and a half minutes early in the second quarter. The run build the Toreros lead to 19-5 with 6:04 to go.

Maya Hood paced the Toreros with a double-double (14 points/12 rebounds) and Ward-El added 14 as well.

Five in a row from Taylor Berry and a jumper from Holloway at the 1:24 mark of the second quarter cut the Bronco deficit to 24-16.

Berry gave Santa Clara 11 points and nine rebounds and Morgan McGwire had a game-high 13 boards.

San Diego outscored Santa Clara 10-0 in the first quarter. The Broncos were 0-for-9 from the field and turned the ball over 10 times.
