Women's Basketball Picks Up 74-53 Exhibition Win Over Academy of Art

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara women's basketball opened the 2018-19 season with a 74-53 exhibition win over Academy of Art Tuesday night in Leavey Center.

The Broncos were led by a balances scoring attack with three players registering double-figures and three more adding at least seven points apiece.

"I thought this was a good start to the season," Santa Clara head coach Bill Carr said. "You play these games to find out what you need to work on. We did some good things and we have some things to work on."

Santa Clara shared the basketball, picking up 21 assists on 27 made baskets.

"I was happy with everybody that was in there," Carr said. "I thought the ball was getting moved where it needed to go and they played well together."

Ashlyn Herlihy led all scorers with 16 while adding 14 rebounds for the double-double. She was 6-for-11 from the field and knocked down a 3-pointer as well.

"Ashlyn did exactly what I asked her to do," Carr said. "That's how she can help our team. She's active on the rebounds, she runs, she can put a lot of pressure on you with her offense."

The two Santa Clara freshmen also scored in double-digits with Lexie Pritchard scoring 15 while also dishing out seven assists and Lindsey VanAllen adding 14 with a pair of triples despite playing only 17 minutes due to foul trouble.

"Lexie and Lindsey did a really nice job tonight," Carr said. "After tonight, they'll understand that you have to play defense at this level. The scoring part comes naturally to those two. They have to be able to stay on the floor without foul trouble."

The Urban Knights hung around in the first quarter but a 9-0 run for the Broncos early in the second quarter pull away.

Academy of Art had a trio in double-figures as well, with Brianna Cates' 13 leading the way. Megan Jefferson added 12 and Josselyn Morris scored 10. Taloni Reese pulled down a team-high nine boards.
