CORVALLIS, Ore. – The size of No. 8 Oregon State was too much for Santa Clara women's basketball Sunday afternoon in a 82-31 road loss.
The Beavers (7-1) used their height advantage to the tune of a 63-16 edge on the glass while outscoring the Broncos (5-3) 18-2 in second chance points and 36-10 in the paint. Oregon State also shot 54.1-percent from the field, including 66.7-percent in the first half, while holding Santa Clara to a mark of 18.3-percent.
"When you play a top-10 team you learn a lot about yourself and things you need to get better at," Santa Clara head coach Bill Carr said. " We saw what speed we need to practice at and the level of detail it takes to be successful. We'll watch this film and get ready for our next stretch of games and heading into conference."
Santa Clara did win the turnover battle, committing just seven, two in the first half, while forcing 20 but couldn't take advantage, outscoring Oregon State just 12-6 in points off turnovers.
"We took pretty good care of the ball today," Carr said. "I was OK with the job we did getting shots up. We got decent looks, we just didn't make them."
All 10 Beavers to see minutes scored at least three points, led by 14 from Tudor on 4-for-6 from beyond the arc. Slocum added a double-double with 12 points and 10 assists and Pivec had a game-high 13 rebounds while adding seven points.
The Broncos were able to get the game within 14-11 on a 3-pointer by Ashlyn Herlihy with 4:59 to go in the first quarter, but the Beavers answered with a 30-6 run over the next 10 minutes to put the game away.
Herlihy finished with a team-high 10 points and four rebounds. Tia Hay added seven with Emily Wolph scoring five.
NOTES
- Santa Clara is now 1-6 all-time against Oregon State.
- The Broncos used the same starting lineup (Wolph, Hay, Jimenez, Herlihy, Yearwood) for the eighth consecutive game.
- The 51-point loss was the fourth worst in program history.
