Women's Basketball Loses Home Contest to LMU

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Despite four players in double-figures, Santa Clara women's basketball fell to LMU 69-60 Thursday night at home behind a game-high 25 from Chelsey Gipson.

Gipson was 7-for-11 from the field and 4-for-8 from beyond the arc to help lead a Lions (14-10, 7-5 WCC) offense that shot 51.1-percent from the field and 46.7-percent from downtown.

Despite not making a field goal over the final 6:12 of the game, LMU was able to hit seven from the free throw line while holding the Broncos (10-12, 3-8 WCC) to just four points, including a four-minute scoring drought.

Santa Clara managed 16 more shots than LMU and made two more but got to the free throw line just twice while the Lions made it there 22 times and converted on 14.

"I thought we played with some good energy tonight," Santa Clara head coach Bill Carr said. "The difference in the game was at the foul line."

After Santa Clara grabbed its only lead of the night in the second, LMU came up with a 13-0 run to get back on top. Jasmine Jones led the way, including a fast break layup with 1:37 left in the quarter to make it 32-25.

Jones finished the night with 15 points and seven rebounds while Bree Alford scored nine with eight boards.

Ashlyn Herlihy's 3-pointer with 1:58 left in the third quarter cut the deficit to 50-49 but Josie Buckingham answered with back-to-back jumpers to stretch the Lions lead back to five.

Herlihy finished with a double-double (12 points/11 rebounds) and Tia Hay scored a team-high 17 while dishing out eight assists. Lauren Yearwood scored 13 with eight boards and Lindsey VanAllen chipped in 12 points.

Santa Clara's best stretch was a 12-0 run to start the second quarter that gave the Broncos their first lead of the night at 25-19 with 5:21 left in the period. Yearwood scored six points during the stretch and the Lions missed four shots and turned the ball over seven times.

LMU answered right back, however, with a 13-0 run of their own to retake the lead. Jones led the way, including a fast break layup with 1:37 left in the quarter to make it 32-25.
