Women's Basketball Faces San Diego Thursday in Opening Round of WCC Tournament

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Seventh seeded Santa Clara women's basketball travels to Las Vegas for the West Coast Conference Tournament and a first round matchup with 10th seeded San Diego Thursday at 2 p.m.

The Broncos finished the regular season with a win at San Diego and a loss at BYU.

They had three players honored on the All-WCC teams Tuesday.

SERIES HISTORY
Santa Clara is 35-41 all-time against San Diego with the first meeting coming in 1984-85. The two teams split the season series, each winning on the others home court.

WCC HALL OF HONOR
Former Broncos player and head coach Caren (Choppelas) Horstmeyer will be the Santa Clara inductee in the WCC Hall of Honor. It is the 11th annual Hall of Honor class and will be recognized Saturday, March 9 during the 2019 WCC Hall of Honor Brunch at the Mardi Gras ballroom in the Orleans Hotel in Las Vegas.

Horstmeyer set the record for most career points at Santa Clara and currently sits at third with 1,496.

She then became the head coach for 12 seasons and posted a 221-124 (.641) record, bringing home six regular season WCC titles and two WCC Tournament championships while making the four NCAA Tournaments and winning the 1991 WNIT.

THE BRONCOS
Santa Clara (13-16, 6-12 WCC) is allowing 66.8 points per game while forcing 14.9 turnovers per game and collecting 8.2 steals per game. The Broncos are shooting 41.0-percent from the field an scoring 64.3 points per game.

Tia Hay is seventh in the WCC with 15.3 ppg and fifth with 4.3 assists per game and 2.0 steals per game. She also leads Santa Clara with 39 3-pointers made. Ashlyn Herlihy's 7.3 rebounds per game are eighth in the conference and she is second on Santa Clara with 11.1 ppg. Lauren Yearwood is 17th in the country with 2.5 blocks per game while adding 6.4 ppg and 6.6 rpg.

THE TOREROS
San Diego (9-20, 2-16 WCC) snapped a 15-game losing streak with a win over San Francisco in the regular season finale. The Toreros are allowing 72.0 ppg while scoring 61.9 on 39.9-percent shooting from the field and 27.9-percent from downtown.

Patricia Brossmann leads the team in both scoring (11.3 ppg) and rebounding (7.6 pg). Madison Pollock scores 11.1 ppg with 6.1 rpg and Leticia Soares adds 10.2 ppg. Sydney Shepard leads San Diego with 3.6 apg and 52 3-pointers made.
