Women's Basketball Begins Regular Season Tuesday With UC Santa Cruz

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara women's basketball gets the 2019-20 season underway Tuesday with a visit from UC Santa Cruz at 3:30 p.m.

The Broncos finished last season 14-17 and 6-12 in the WCC, a seventh-place finish. They topped San Diego in the first round of the conference tournament before seeing their season come to an end against Pacific.


SERIES HISTORY
Santa Clara is 3-0 all-time against UC Santa Cruz with the first meeting coming in 1965-66. During the 2016-17 season, the Broncos topped the Banana Slugs 85-39 in Leavey Center.

THE BRONCOS
Santa Clara (0-0) welcomes back Tia Hay, a Preseason All-WCC pick and 2019 second team selection, led the team with 15.5 ppg, 32.3 minutes per game, 4.2 assists per game, 2.0 steals per game, and an 81.5-percent mark from the free throw line.

Also back is Ashlyn Herlihy who led the Broncos with 7.4 rebounds per game and finished second with 10.9 ppg. Lindsey VanAllen will be back for her sophomore campaign after averaging 6.5 ppg last season. Herlihy was All-WCC honorable mention and VanAllen was All-Freshman.

Lauren Yearwood set a program record with 79 blocks during the 2018-19 season while scoring 6.5 ppg and grabbing 6.5 rpg. Senior Emily Wolph scored 6.9 ppg a season ago and led the team in 3-pointers made.

The Broncos will welcome five newcomers to the roster as well. Freshman Ashlee Maldonado, graduate transfer from Stetson Addison Walters, sophomore transfer from Boston College Lana Hollinsworth, and junior college transfer Merle Wiehl will all look to make their mark during the season with sophomore transfer Shayley Harris from UCLA sitting out the season due to NCAA rules.

THE BANANA SLUGS
UC Santa Cruz (0-0) finished last year 14-10 while outscoring its opponents 69.9-59.3. The Banana Slugs shot 37.7-percent from the floor and 30.0-percent from beyond the arc.

Ashley Kowack led the team with 17.0 ppg and 71 3-pointers made as a freshman. Also returning is Kaylee Murphy who led the team with 10.3 rpg, 2.8 apg, 2.1 spg, and 1.9 bpg and was second with 10.7 ppg. Savannah Henson scored 8.8 ppg a year ago to round out the top-three who are all back.

All Broncos home games and West Coast Conference contests (not on an ESPN platform, CBS Sports Network or BYUtv) will also be streamed through WCC Network. PARKING
For weekday games, the Leavey Center lot (see below for access), located on Accolti Way off El Camino Real, is free beginning one hour prior to tipoff. Any other parking facility on campus will be subject to normal daily rates or restrictions, including the main structure, located adjacent to Stevens Stadium on Palm Drive. The construction of the Stephen C. and Patricia A. Schott Athletic Excellence Center has necessitated the closure of the main entrance (off Accolti Way) to the Leavey Center parking lot. Access is now ONLY directly from El Camino Real (Route 82). If you are traveling east on El Camino Real, the Leavey lot entrance will be approximately 150 yards on the right (enter through the black iron gate) after you pass the main campus entrance. If you are traveling west on El Camino, make a u-turn at the main campus entrance at Palm Drive/Railroad Ave and follow the same directions.
