Beach Volleyball Wins First Dual at SCU in Program History

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Santa Clara beach volleyball secured its first victory of the 2020 season on Wednesday and made program history in the process. The Broncos defeated Pacific 3-2 to win their first dual on the Mission campus since the opening of the Santa Clara Beach Volleyball Courts in 2018.

Alex Anthony produced the dual-clinching kill in the third set of the final tilt; she teamed up with Elizabeth Held to defeat Jenny Todd/Jadyn Tubbs 21-16, 19-21, 15-9. The Broncos (1-9) rallied to take three must-win matches after falling behind the Tigers (1-5) early.

Michelle Shaffer/Kathryn Decker ran their team-leading record to 6-4 at the No. 1 spot with a 25-23, 21-17 victory over Hanne De Schrijver/Sedona Sherman. Claire Doud/Brynn Paumen prevailed at No. 4 against Claire Danna/Kaelyn Saler 21-18, 21-18 to pull the Broncos level.

"I'm very happy with our team getting the first home win of the season in front of a supportive local crowd," associate head coach Jeff Alzina said. "We applied our performance concepts with more intention today and it paid off well in key moments."
