Santa Clara Just Misses a Fourth-Place Varsity 8 Finish at WCC Rowing Championship

RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. – The Santa Clara University women just missed finishing fourth at the 2011 West Coast conference rowing championship, finishing four seconds behind Creighton and two seconds behind LMU in the day's marquee race, the Varsity 8 (1).

Santa Clara senior Jillian Walker (Aurora, Colo.) was named to the 2011 West Coast Conference All-Conference Team. For complete results visit: WCC Rowing Championship Central

For the second straight year, the University of San Diego captured the West Coast conference rowing championship.  Unlike 2010, however, this year's Toreros swept all three races on a cool, windy morning at Sacramento State Aquatics Center on Lake Natoma.    In the final point standings, San Diego topped Gonzaga, 36 to 30.  Saint Mary's finished third, followed by Creighton, Loyola Marymount, and Santa Clara.  "I'm so proud of our effort," said San Diego head coach Kim Cupini.  "It's always a challenge – especially now as the WCC has gotten stronger.  We were able to show the full depth of our program, winning all three races for the first time."

All three races were tightly contested on the morning.  San Diego's Varsity Four bested Gonzaga by three seconds to take a six-points to five lead with two races to go.  In the Eight II race, once again the Toreros proved to be tough, topping Gonzaga by 4.6 seconds.  Entering the final race of the morning, San Diego held an 18-15 lead over the Bulldogs.

The Championship title came down to the last race of the dayonce again, and for the second straight year, San Diego pulled through for the victory, edging Gonzaga by a mere 1.6 seconds.

San Diego head coach Kim Cupini was also named the WCC Coach of the Year for the third consecutive season, while San Diego's Allyn DeLoziergarnered WCC Coxswain of the Year honors for the second straight year.
